    Though English Language Education (ELE) is a core and crucial area of the Indian education system, very few universities offer a dedicated PhD programme in ELE. This programme marks a significant and innovative addition to the list. It is a unique programme in terms of

    Participants in the PhD ELE programme get a realistic opportunity to contribute to

    • exploring and understanding domain and practices in the Indian ELE
    • developing effective principles and strategies for ELE practices for improved learning outcomes
    • engaging in and promoting teacher professional development
    • creation of knowledgebase for ELE teacher educator cadre
    • Incorporating discourses pertaining to gender, SDGs, and environmental issue in ELE research
    • contributing to the documentation and critique the Indian ELE

     

    The PhD programme has been developed by the Centre for English Language Education in collaboration with the School of Education Studies

     

    Objectives
     

    The programme aims to converge local and global ELE principles and practices, approaching ELE as a social phenomenon informed by historical and contemporary perspectives. In doing so it also aims to incorporate explorations of the relationship of ELE with such contemporary concerns as globalization, ecological challenges, inclusivity issues and SDG goals. Broadly, the objectives are to:
     

    • Train critically competent, contextually sensitive and socially responsible researchers in ELE, who contribute to the improvement of the ELE domain in various ways
    • Promote holistic ELE research considering its role and place in the Indian education system
    • Promote innovative evidence-based inquiries through exploring and initiating alterative pedagogies, positions and perspectives
    • Contribute to expanding the research and knowledge base of ELE in India, including its wider dissemination

    Eligibility

    Master’s degree with 55% or equivalent grade from a recognized institution in India or abroad.

    The programme involves undertaking some courses and writing a research dissertation. The details are as follows:

    • Duration of Coursework: 2 Semesters; Full-Time
    • Coursework Credits: 16
    • Coursework Components: Core Courses (12 Credits) + Electives (4 Credits) + Doctoral Seminar + Portfolio Presentation
    • Outcome: Research Dissertation

    The timeline is further guided by the rules and regulations laid down by the SCR of the University from time to time. Any relaxation in these milestones can be made after due deliberation in the PhD Programme Advisory Committee and through the approval of the RSC guided by the rules and regulations laid down by the University.

    • Develop ability to conduct research independently and in collaboration with academic rigour and integrity
    • Develop a critical understanding of ELE in the Indian education context
    • Problematize issues in ELE in order to develop a nuanced understanding of and context-sensitive strategies to deal with them
    • Develop ability to write for and disseminate research for professional community and wider society

    Yes, but the candidates are required to submit No Objection certificate from the employers.

    All these course are of four credits each.

    What are the elective courses?

    Candidates are welcome to take electives from the courses offered in Ph. D. Education by the School of Education (see the list below) or from Ph. D. programmes in other schools of the University. Candidates can also take a guided reading course as an elective.
